Kentucky Basketball has added another major development to its 2027 recruiting efforts, as five-star point guard Reese Alston completed a surprise official visit to Lexington. The visit happened earlier than originally planned, putting the Wildcats back in the spotlight in one of the more closely watched recruiting battles involving an elite point guard.
A Surprise Trip to Lexington
Alston had originally been expected to make his official visit to Kentucky in October, but that schedule changed. According to multiple reports published September 30, the highly regarded guard instead made the trip to Lexington this week and has now completed the visit.
The timing makes the development particularly interesting because Alston is already deep into his recruitment. He trimmed his list to seven schools in August: Kentucky, Louisville, Houston, LSU, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Wichita Stat
Alston has also been visiting several of those programs, giving him the opportunity to compare different coaching staffs, programs and environments before making a decision.
One of the Top Guards in the 2027 Class
Alston is widely regarded as one of the premier guards in the 2027 recruiting class.
A Sea of Blue, citing the 247Sports Composite, lists the Houston, Texas, product as the No. 9 overall prospect nationally, No. 3 point guard and No. 1 player in Texas. On3 also described him as a top-10 national prospect and No. 3 at his position in its latest rankings cited by KSR.
The 6-foot-2/6-foot-3 guard plays for Second Baptist School in Houston and is coming off an impressive junior season.
According to the reports, Alston averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.7 steals per game during the 2025-26 high school season. His production earned him MaxPreps Junior All-American First Team recognition.
Those numbers help explain why so many high-level programs have remained involved in his recruitment.
Kentucky Has Been Building the Relationship
Kentucky’s interest in Alston isn’t new.
The Wildcats first offered him in 2025 following an unofficial visit to Lexington for Big Blue Madness. Since then, Kentucky has continued to stay involved, with head coach Mark Pope and assistant coach Mikhail McLean both playing roles in the recruitment
There is also an interesting connection between Alston’s family and Pope.
Alston’s father, former NBA guard Rafer Alston, and Pope were teammates with the Milwaukee Bucks from 2000-02. That existing connection adds another layer to Kentucky’s recruitment of the younger Alston.
Kentucky assistant Mikhail McLean also has a connection to Alston’s high school, Second Baptist, according to Sports Illustrated’s Kentucky coverage.
Kentucky Faces Plenty of Competition
While the surprise official visit is significant, it does not mean Alston has committed to Kentucky.
The five-star guard continues to have several programs involved. His final seven include major programs from across the country, while Louisville has also been heavily involved in his recruitment.
Alston has already taken official visits to several schools, including Louisville, Wichita State, LSU and Tennessee, according to recent recruiting reports.
That makes the Kentucky visit another important piece of a recruitment that is still developing.
What the Visit Means for Kentucky
From Kentucky’s perspective, getting Alston onto campus for an official visit provides the Wildcats another opportunity to sell the program.
The Kentucky basketball program has a long history of developing guards and sending them to the NBA, something Alston himself has reportedly mentioned when discussing his interest in the Wildcats. He has also spoken positively about his relationship with Pope and McLean and Kentucky’s basketball tradition.
For a player who is expected to be one of the most closely followed guards in his recruiting class, those relationships could remain important as the process continues.
Still, an official visit should be viewed as one stage of the recruiting process rather than an indication that a commitment is imminent.
The Next Chapter of Alston’s Recruitment
The biggest question now is what comes next.
Alston has visited several of his finalists, and Kentucky’s unexpected visit adds another major event to his recruiting timeline. With multiple programs still involved, there is plenty of time for the picture to change before he makes his final decision.
For Kentucky fans, however, the latest development provides another reason to pay attention to the Wildcats’ 2027 recruiting class.
Alston’s combination of scoring ability, playmaking and defensive production has made him a major target, and Kentucky has now had another opportunity to make its case directly to the five-star guard.
