PHILLIES FACE A MAJOR DECISION ON TREA TURNER AFTER ROUGH 2026 SEASON

The Philadelphia Phillies could be facing one of the most important roster decisions of their offseason, with Trea Turner’s long-term position becoming a major question heading into the 2027 season.

After a difficult campaign at both the plate and in the field, Turner may no longer be guaranteed the opportunity to remain Philadelphia’s everyday shortstop. The veteran infielder endured a particularly challenging 2026 season defensively, and there is growing speculation that the Phillies could explore moving him to another position.

Turner led the majors with 21 errors at shortstop in 2026, a startling number for a player who has traditionally been viewed as one of the more athletic middle infielders in baseball. His struggles in the field were compounded by an uncharacteristically poor offensive season.

The 33-year-old hit .242 with 19 home runs, 29 doubles and 156 hits in 645 at-bats. He also finished with an 81 OPS+, significantly below his career mark of 116. While Turner still produced stretches of quality baseball, his overall performance represented a major step backward from the offensive impact Philadelphia has expected since signing him.

Now, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, the Phillies may need to have a serious conversation with Turner about his defensive future.

Gelb suggested that Turner’s status as Philadelphia’s unquestioned shortstop and a fixture near the top of the lineup may no longer be automatic. Once the Phillies hire a new manager, one of the first priorities could be opening a discussion with Turner about whether a position change makes sense.

That would represent a significant development for a player who has spent much of his career at shortstop.

Turner’s athleticism has always been one of his biggest strengths, but his 2026 defensive struggles could force Philadelphia to consider whether another position would allow him to maximize what remains of his offensive and physical abilities.

The challenge is determining where he would actually play.

Turner has not played in the outfield since 2016, meaning a return to the grass would require a significant adjustment. His more recent experience away from shortstop came at second base with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021.

Second base could therefore represent a more natural alternative, although moving Turner there would create another domino effect across Philadelphia’s roster.

The Phillies will also have to consider what such a move would mean for the rest of their infield. If Turner leaves shortstop, Philadelphia would need to identify a reliable replacement while simultaneously determining how the move affects its plans at second and third base.

That makes the decision more complicated than simply asking Turner to change positions.

There is also a financial component that cannot be ignored. Turner has seven years remaining on his contract, meaning the Phillies are committed to him for a substantial portion of the next decade. Moving him is not simply a short-term experiment. It could influence the organization’s roster construction for years.

Philadelphia therefore needs to determine whether Turner’s 2026 season was an isolated down year or evidence of a more permanent defensive decline.

If the Phillies believe he can bounce back at shortstop, keeping him there could provide stability and allow the organization to avoid creating another major roster hole. But if the front office believes his defensive performance has reached a concerning point, acting now could prevent the problem from becoming more difficult to solve later.

The timing is particularly important.

Philadelphia is expected to face an owner-imposed lockout beginning December 1, which would prevent team officials from communicating with players. That leaves the organization with a limited window to discuss Turner’s future and establish a clear plan before that deadline arrives.

The Phillies also need to hire a manager, and that decision could play a role in determining how Turner is used. A new manager will be expected to work with the front office on a plan that maximizes the roster, and Turner’s position could become one of the first major issues on the agenda.

There is no guarantee that a position change will happen. Turner remains an accomplished player with elite athletic ability, and one difficult season does not erase everything he has accomplished throughout his career.

However, his 2026 campaign has created enough uncertainty that the Phillies can no longer afford to treat his role as untouchable.

Philadelphia has championship ambitions, and every part of the roster will be examined this offseason. Turner’s contract, offensive production and defensive struggles make his situation especially important.

Whether he remains at shortstop, returns to second base or potentially explores an outfield role, the Phillies need clarity before they can fully build their 2027 roster.

For Turner, the offseason could therefore become about more than bouncing back at the plate. It may also be about proving that shortstop is still the right position for him.

For the Phillies, the decision could shape the entire direction of their infield heading into 2027.
