The Philadelphia Phillies are heading into the offseason with several important decisions to make after another disappointing postseason exit, and one of the biggest questions could involve infielder Luis Arraez.
Philadelphia saw its season come to an end against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card Series, leaving the organization with plenty to evaluate before turning its attention toward 2027. Among those decisions is whether Arraez remains part of the team’s plans moving forward.
The 29-year-old is eligible to reach free agency this offseason, creating uncertainty around his future with the Phillies. While Philadelphia could still make an effort to bring him back, one recent prediction has connected Arraez with an unexpected National League destination.
According to Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, the Pittsburgh Pirates could emerge as a potential landing spot for the three-time batting champion if they lose first baseman Josh Lowe in free agency.
Kelly suggested that Pittsburgh could view Arraez as a way to address a potential hole in the middle of its infield while adding another established offensive player to its lineup.
“If Lowe ends up not returning to Pittsburgh, the Buccos will have a hole at second base,” Kelly wrote. “One way to soften the negative reaction to not bringing Lowe back after an excellent contract year is to sign a replacement as accomplished as Arraez.”
The possibility is intriguing because of what Arraez could bring to a Pittsburgh lineup. Known primarily for his elite contact ability, the veteran has built his reputation around putting the ball in play consistently and making difficult at-bats look routine.
Kelly also pointed to the potential of pairing Arraez with young infielder Konnor Griffin, suggesting that the combination could provide Pittsburgh with significant offensive potential as the organization looks to take another step forward.
For the Pirates, adding a player with Arraez’s experience would represent a notable move. Pittsburgh has been working to develop a younger core, and adding an established veteran could give that group another experienced presence in the lineup.
For Philadelphia, however, the situation is more complicated.
The Phillies acquired Arraez from the San Francisco Giants before the trade deadline, hoping his contact-oriented approach could provide another dimension to an already talented lineup. Before the move, Arraez was hitting .324 with four home runs in 105 games and had earned his fourth career All-Star selection.
His production changed somewhat after arriving in Philadelphia.
Over 46 games with the Phillies, Arraez hit .278 with two home runs. While that batting average still demonstrated his ability to make consistent contact, it represented a noticeable drop from his production earlier in the season.
That second-half dip could become part of Philadelphia’s offseason evaluation.
The Phillies have to determine how much value they place on Arraez’s ability to consistently put the ball in play compared with the rest of his offensive profile. With other areas of the roster also requiring attention, the organization may have to carefully weigh the financial and roster implications of bringing him back.
At the same time, allowing Arraez to leave would create another hole that Philadelphia would eventually have to address.
The Phillies have invested heavily in building a roster capable of competing deep into October, and maintaining offensive depth will remain important. Arraez may not provide the same type of power as some of Philadelphia’s biggest stars, but his contact skills can give a lineup a different look.
That makes the upcoming free-agency period particularly interesting.
If the Phillies decide they want to retain Arraez, they could face competition from teams looking for an experienced hitter. Pittsburgh is one club that has now been publicly identified as a potential destination, although the prediction does not mean a deal is imminent.
Much will depend on how the Pirates approach their offseason and whether Lowe ultimately returns to Pittsburgh. If the Pirates do need a new option at second base, Arraez could make sense as an experienced player who could immediately contribute.
For Philadelphia, the decision will ultimately come down to how Arraez fits into the club’s long-term plans.
His brief stint with the Phillies produced mixed results, but his track record before arriving in Philadelphia remains impressive. The organization will have to determine whether his contact ability and veteran experience outweigh the concerns raised by his post-trade performance.
As the offseason gets underway, Arraez’s future is therefore one of several storylines worth watching closely.
If the Phillies and Arraez cannot agree on a new contract, the Pirates could be a team to monitor. Pittsburgh would offer him an opportunity to become an important veteran presence, while Philadelphia would have to find another way to replace his production.
Nothing has been decided yet, but with Arraez potentially entering free agency, his next move could become one of the Phillies’ most interesting offseason developments.
