LThe Philadelphia Phillies have received an important boost to their organizational stability after Sam Fuld reportedly turned down an offer from the Athletics to become their next president of baseball operations. Rather than pursuing a new challenge with the rebuilding franchise, Fuld has decided to remain in Philadelphia, where he continues to play an important role in the Phillies’ front office.

According to a league source who spoke anonymously to The Athletic because of the private nature of the negotiations, Fuld declined the Athletics’ offer and will remain in his current position as the Phillies’ president of business operations. ESPN first reported that Fuld would stay with Philadelphia.

The decision represents a significant development for both organizations. The Athletics are searching for a new leader to oversee their baseball operations, while the Phillies retain an experienced executive who has steadily established himself as an important figure within their organization.

For Philadelphia, keeping Fuld provides continuity at a time when maintaining a strong organizational structure remains essential to the franchise’s ambitions. For the Athletics, however, his decision means the search for a new baseball operations president must continue.

FULD CHOOSES CONTINUITY WITH THE PHILLIES

Fuld’s decision to remain with the Phillies highlights the career he has built since transitioning from professional baseball to the front office.

Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of Stanford University, Fuld enjoyed an eight-year major-league career as an outfielder. His playing days included appearances with several organizations, including parts of two seasons with the Athletics when the franchise was still based in Oakland.

Following his retirement as a player, Fuld moved into coaching and front-office work, gradually building a reputation as a knowledgeable baseball executive.

His responsibilities with the Phillies expanded over time. He progressed from working as a major-league coach to serving as general manager under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. That experience gave him an increasingly important position within Philadelphia’s baseball leadership structure.

Fuld also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, adding business expertise to his background in professional baseball.

Although the Athletics presented him with an opportunity to lead an entire baseball operations department, Fuld ultimately decided against leaving Philadelphia. His choice allows him to continue contributing to the Phillies organization without taking on the enormous rebuilding challenge awaiting the Athletics’ next executive.

ATHLETICS FACE AN IMPORTANT REBUILDING CHALLENGE

The Athletics’ search for a new baseball operations president comes after several difficult seasons for the franchise.

The club finished the 2026 season with a 64-98 record, leaving it with one of the worst records in Major League Baseball. The disappointing campaign underscored the work required to transform the roster into a consistent contender.

In August, the Athletics dismissed longtime general manager David Forst, who joined the organization in 2000. During his lengthy tenure, Forst became an influential figure in the franchise’s baseball operations, working closely with former executive Billy Beane.

Together with other members of the organization’s leadership, Forst helped construct and reshape teams that made 11 postseason appearances during his time with the Athletics.

However, the franchise has struggled to recapture that success in recent years. Its most recent postseason appearance came during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

The team’s circumstances have also complicated its efforts to establish a stable foundation for the future.

The Athletics currently play their home games at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, a minor-league ballpark they share with the Sacramento River Cats. The temporary arrangement is part of the franchise’s transition toward its planned relocation to Las Vegas.

The Athletics are scheduled to begin playing on the Las Vegas Strip in 2028, creating another significant milestone in the club’s history.

Until then, the organization must navigate its temporary home, rebuild its roster and establish a clearer direction for its baseball operations.

A NEW EXECUTIVE WILL INHERIT YOUNG TALENT

Despite the Athletics’ disappointing results, the next president of baseball operations will not necessarily be starting from scratch.

The organization possesses several young players who could form the foundation of a more competitive team in the coming seasons.

Tyler Soderstrom, Jacob Wilson and Lawrence Butler are among the players expected to feature prominently in the club’s long-term plans. Brent Rooker also provides an established offensive presence, while Nick Kurtz offers another important building block after winning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2025.

The challenge will be finding the right combination of player development, roster construction and long-term planning to turn that collection of talent into a consistent winner.

Whoever replaces Forst will need to evaluate the current roster, identify areas requiring improvement and determine how best to use the organization’s financial and developmental resources.

Dan Feinstein, another longtime Athletics official, served as interim general manager following Forst’s departure.

The next permanent executive will inherit a demanding assignment: restoring competitiveness while preparing the franchise for its planned move to Las Vegas.

PHILLIES AVOID LOSING AN EXPERIENCED EXECUTIVE

For the Phillies, Fuld’s decision provides reassurance that an important member of their leadership group will remain in place.

His experience as a player, coach and executive gives him an understanding of professional baseball from several perspectives. His business education also complements the broader responsibilities he has undertaken during his time in Philadelphia.

Although his current position differs from the baseball operations role offered by the Athletics, his decision to stay ensures that the Phillies retain a familiar executive within their organizational structure.

Ultimately, Fuld’s rejection of the offer leaves two franchises facing different realities. The Athletics must continue searching for the right person to lead their rebuilding effort, while the Phillies can move forward with Fuld remaining in Philadelphia.

For a franchise hoping to maintain stability and compete at the highest level, keeping experienced leadership in place is a positive development.

Fuld has made his decision, and the Phillies can now focus on their own priorities while the Athletics continue their search for a new leader to guide the next chapter of their organization.
