Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner has expressed his enormous satisfaction after watching his side deliver a memorable 3-1 victory over Manchester City at the City Ground on Saturday evening. The Forest boss described the occasion as a particularly special night for the club, highlighting the players’ determination, incredible team spirit and passionate supporters as crucial ingredients behind a statement performance against one of the Premier League’s biggest sides.
The victory represents a significant breakthrough for Forest, who had been desperate to secure their first home win of the Premier League campaign. Facing Manchester City was always expected to be a difficult assignment, but Glasner’s players produced an impressive performance to overcome the challenge and collect three valuable points.
More importantly, the result has lifted Nottingham Forest out of the relegation zone, taking their league tally to nine points and providing renewed optimism about their prospects for the remainder of the season.
A SPECIAL NIGHT FOR NOTTINGHAM FOREST
The atmosphere inside the City Ground was electric as Forest welcomed Manchester City, with the home supporters creating an intimidating environment for the visiting champions.
Forest responded to that energy with an impressive display, showing attacking ambition, defensive discipline and the determination required to compete against elite opposition.
Jair Cunha opened the scoring to give the hosts an important advantage before Liam Delap took centre stage with two clinical finishes to complete an outstanding individual performance.
Although Manchester City managed to find the net and threatened to make the contest uncomfortable, Forest demonstrated the resilience necessary to protect their advantage and eventually secure a convincing victory.
Speaking after the final whistle, Glasner could hardly hide his happiness. The Forest manager praised the commitment of his players and the connection between the team and supporters.
“It’s a very special night. Credit to the players for how passionate they played and for the spirit. I really loved the spirit in the team and in the City Ground and the togetherness,” Glasner said, according to the club’s official website.
His comments reflected the importance of the occasion, particularly after a difficult period in which Forest had struggled to turn their performances into positive results at home.
FOREST OVERCOME CITY’S PRESSURE
Despite the impressive scoreline, Nottingham Forest were forced to work extremely hard for their victory.
Manchester City enjoyed periods of possession and applied considerable pressure, particularly after finding a way back into the contest. Their attacking quality created difficult moments for the Forest defence, forcing the hosts to remain organised and concentrated.
However, the home supporters continued to encourage their players, creating an atmosphere that Glasner believes made a significant difference.
Rather than allowing City’s pressure to overwhelm them, Forest maintained their discipline and continued fighting for every ball.
The manager specifically acknowledged the importance of the crowd during the most challenging moments of the encounter.
“After the City goal we had moments where we suffered and in those moments the atmosphere was incredible. We had the full backing of our fans and this helped us to overcome a tough period,” he explained.
That support proved particularly valuable as Forest attempted to prevent Manchester City from building momentum. The players remained committed to their defensive responsibilities while looking for opportunities to exploit spaces left by the visitors.
For Glasner, the performance demonstrated the importance of collective belief and the relationship between the supporters and the squad.
LIAM DELAP DELIVERS THE DECISIVE MOMENT
While Forest’s victory was built on an outstanding team performance, Liam Delap deserves considerable recognition for his contribution.
The striker scored twice, demonstrating his finishing ability and composure in front of goal. His willingness to threaten City’s defence gave Forest an additional attacking dimension and ultimately helped the hosts establish a commanding position.
Glasner was particularly impressed with Delap’s ability to finish with both feet, highlighting the quality and confidence behind his second-half contribution.
The manager also identified Delap’s third goal as the decisive moment that effectively changed the psychological direction of the contest.
With Manchester City pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Forest needed another goal to restore their advantage and prevent the visitors from believing they could complete a comeback.
Delap delivered at precisely the right moment.
“Liam’s third goal felt like a neck breaker, and we got the confidence that we can really win this game, so credit to the players and credit, and thank you, to our fans,” Glasner added.
That goal gave Forest the breathing space they desperately needed and allowed the supporters to celebrate a victory that had previously seemed far from guaranteed.
GLASNER PRAISES THE COLLECTIVE PERFORMANCE
Interestingly, Glasner refused to focus exclusively on Delap’s individual contribution, insisting that every player deserved recognition for their efforts.
The manager explained that Manchester City’s attacking versatility made defending a narrow advantage particularly challenging. Their ability to create opportunities through central areas and wide positions meant Forest needed to remain alert throughout the contest.
He also emphasised why extending their lead was essential rather than simply retreating into their defensive shape.
“The pressure increased and City were playing around our box and we know how difficult it is to defend. They can play through the middle and they can cross from out wide. We needed the third goal and Liam showed his finishing quality with the right foot and left foot,” Glasner explained.
He concluded by praising the entire squad, making it clear that the result belonged to everyone involved.
“No player deserves to be mentioned individually today because it was such a fantastic team effort and all the praise belongs to them.”
A HUGE BOOST IN FOREST’S SURVIVAL FIGHT
Beyond the excitement of defeating Manchester City, Nottingham Forest will understand the importance of this result in the wider context of their Premier League campaign.
Moving out of the relegation zone provides an important psychological boost and gives Glasner an opportunity to build momentum ahead of the club’s upcoming fixtures.
The challenge now is maintaining the intensity, organisation and attacking confidence displayed against City.
One impressive victory cannot guarantee a successful season, but beating such formidable opposition could provide the foundation for a much-needed revival.
For Glasner, the priority will be ensuring that his players carry this confidence into their next matches.
The City Ground witnessed a memorable evening, the supporters finally celebrated a first home league victory of the campaign, and Forest secured three points that could prove enormously valuable.
After such a statement performance, Nottingham Forest have given their supporters genuine reasons to believe that their season can take a positive turn.
