University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles has been arrested and charged with murder following a shooting near the campus that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman, as announced by US authorities.
The University of Alabama athletics department confirmed Miles’ removal from the basketball team in response to the charges.
Additionally, 20-year-old Michael Lynn Davis faces charges in connection with the shooting. Both suspects are charged with capital murder and are currently held without bond. Authorities stated Miles as the sole individual associated with the university in connection with the incident.
Police responded to the shooting early Sunday, discovering Jamea Jonae Harris fatally shot in a car near the campus. According to investigators, the driver of the car reported exchanging gunfire in self-defense after their vehicle was shot at.
Following investigations and witness statements, Miles and Davis were identified as suspects. One of the suspects sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the exchange of gunfire. Investigators believe the altercation stemmed from a minor confrontation on The Strip, a nearby area of restaurants and businesses.
The university and athletics department are cooperating with the investigation. Miles, a junior from Washington, DC, was in his third season as a forward for the Alabama Crimson Tide before his removal from the team.
