Kyrie Irving to replace injured Mavericks teammate Anthony Davis on NBA All-Star roster

Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving will replace injured teammate Anthony Davis on the All-Star roster.

The NBA announced the news on Monday. The decision was made by commissioner Adam Silver.

Davis was initially selected as an All-Star reserve as a member of the Lakers prior to his trade to the Mavericks for Luka Dončić. Davis returned from an abdominal strain for his Mavericks debut on Saturday only to suffer an adductor strain that’s expected to sideline him for several weeks.

The All-Star selection is the ninth for Irving, who’s averaging 24.1 points, 4.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game this season. He’s the second replacement player to be named on Monday. Earlier, the NBA announced that Trae Young will replace injured Bucks All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Irving will play on Team Shaq under the first-year All-Star format that will feature four teams playing in a mini-tournament on Sunday. Shaquille O’Neal initially selected Davis on his team as one of four captains alongside Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Candace Parker.

Young will replace Antetokounmpo on Team Chuck.
