The Georgia Bulldogs are making a change at quarterback, as Gunner Stockton will be replacing Carson Beck, who transferred to the Miami Hurricanes after the conclusion of the 2024 campaign. While some folks are a fan of the switch, Paul Finebaum believes that Georgia has gotten worse at the most important position in the game. Stockton replaced Beck in the SEC Championship Game, and promptly led the Bulldogs to victory over the Texas Longhorns.
With Beck departing for Miami, this opens the door for Stockton to have the inside track to earn the starting quarterback gig, which he is clearly excited for. “It’s always been my dream to be the starting quarterback at Georgia. I’m really excited. Places like Georgia, I mean they’re supposed to be good. Every year they’re supposed to sign the top quarterback in the country. So that’s how it is,” Stockton said.
Beck’s inconsistency seemed to irritate Georgia fans as the season went on, but he still played a big role in the Bulldogs earning the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff. While there’s excitement surrounding Stockton, Finebaum hit the Bulldogs with a hard reality now that Beck is gone. “They lost a better quarterback than the guy they have,” Finebaum said, per On3 Sports. Stockton’s victory over Texas when he was thrown into the fire in place of Beck was certainly impressive, but Georgia promptly lost to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in their first CFP game. Stockton threw for 234 yards and a touchdown, but he also lost a fumble and struggled to get the Bulldogs into the endzone.
There’s certainly upside with Stockton, but his floor is not nearly as high as Beck’s was. So while Georgia may be happy to get rid of their inconsistent passer, Finebaum is warning them that things may not go as expected in 2025.
