Austin Reaves, the Los Angeles Lakers guard, has declined a 4-year, $89.2 million max contract extension offer. This decision isn’t seen as a sign of discontent with the Lakers but rather a calculated move to maximize his earnings in the future. Reaves is entering the third season of a four-year, $54 million contract signed in July 2023 and has a $14.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season.
Reaves’ choice reflects a growing trend among NBA players who bet on themselves to increase their value. By declining the extension, he’s positioning himself to potentially enter unrestricted free agency and open the door for a more lucrative deal. Reaves could command a significantly larger contract, potentially with a first-year salary of $42.5 million, if he waits until next summer.
The Lakers’ front office values Reaves highly, with General Manager Rob Pelinka emphasizing the need for high-character players like Reaves, LeBron James, and Luka Doncic to build a winning team. Reaves has expressed his desire to stay with the Lakers long-term, saying, “I want to be in LA. I want to play my whole career in LA. And I love it there. I love the fans. Love the weather, love the golf.”
Reaves’ impressive performance this season has made him one of the most promising young talents in the league. He posted career-highs of 20.2 points, 5.8 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.7 made 3-pointers per game, shooting 46% from the field and 38% from three-point range. This achievement places him among elite company, with only 10 players in Lakers history averaging 20 points and five assists in a single season.
The Lakers’ potential salary cap situation could become complicated if Reaves signs a new deal with a high starting salary, especially considering Luka Doncic’s eligibility for an extension worth up to $229 million. LeBron James also has a player option worth $52.6 million and can enter free agency.
