The Lakers pull off a surprise signing to give LeBron James some extra help

The Los Angeles Lakers have made an unexpected move in the NBA by signing guard Nick Smith Jr., aiming to bolster their roster and provide additional support for LeBron James this season. The two-way deal will allow Smith Jr. to play in up to 50 official games while the franchise continues to fine-tune its lineup.

The Lakers officially confirmed the addition of Smith Jr. under a dual contract, a step that underscores the team’s intention to strengthen its perimeter rotation. The move is designed to give LeBron James more offensive support and ensure greater stability in key moments of the game.

Smith Jr. appeared in 60 games with the Charlotte Hornets during the 2024-25 campaign. He averaged 9.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 22.8 minutes per game. He started in 27 regular-season contests.

His participation with the Lakers will be capped at 50 games under the terms of his contract. With this addition, the Lakers aim to solidify their second unit and reduce the workload of their main stars.

Smith Jr.’s skill set aligns well with the pace and style of play the Lakers are targeting, especially in a season where every game will be vital to secure a favorable playoff position.

For LeBron James, the reinforcement provides much-needed backup and the possibility of greater offensive freedom, while the young guard will look to establish himself within a roster built for high aspirations in the NBA.
