Lakers officially waive 6-foot former UNC standout, son of Hall of Fame guard

The Los Angeles Lakers are headed for a pivotal 2025-26 campaign with a rebuilt Luka Dončić running the show in his first full season with the storied franchise.

Depth will play a key role for Los Angeles, especially to begin their quest for a championship with 21-time All-Star LeBron James sidelined for a few weeks with sciatica. Still, the Lakers’ front office was forced to make a few roster decisions to ensure that they’ll go into the year with only 15 players on standard contracts.

Unfortunately for some of the Lakers’ training camp signees, their time with the organization has come to a close. “The Los Angeles Lakers have waived RJ Davis, Augustas Marčiulionis, Anton Watson and Nate Williams,” the team shared via X on Saturday afternoon. After a short preseason run, four players were sent home, a group headlined by notable five-year collegiate star for the University of North Carolina RJ Davis.

The 6-foot scoring guard averaged 15.6 points and 3.8 assists while knocking down 36.7% of his 5.6 attempts from three-point range spanning a 175-game career with the program from 2020-2025. At just 23 years old, it remains likely that he’ll land on a G-League roster at some point in the near future.

Along with Davis, 23-year-old Augustas Marčiulionis also received the news that his services were no longer needed with the team. The son of 1992 Sixth Man of the Year runner-up as a member of the Golden State Warriors and accomplished Lithuanian star Šarūnas Marčiulionis, Augustas got his shot to contend for a roster spot with the Lakers to no avail.

Following his four-year collegiate career with St. Mary’s College of California, the 6-foot-4 guard did not make an impact throughout the preseason and was unable to receive any notable burn from head coach JJ Redick.
