Since the All-Star break, Ayton has averaged 10.1 points and 7.9 rebounds over a 17-game stretch, adapting to a role focused more on rebounding, rim protection and energy rather than scoring. That adjustment came after a period of self-reflection, as Ayton acknowledged shifting his mindset to better fit the team’s needs. “I just started looking in the mirror and said, ‘You’re not that guy,’” Ayton recently told The Athletic. “We need you to be the effort guy… run the floor, rebound and make bigs work.”
Lakers Lean on Doncic, Reaves With Frontcourt Thin
With Ayton unavailable, the Lakers will need to rely more heavily on their perimeter creators, including Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. Dončić led Los Angeles with 32 points in the loss to Detroit, while Reaves added 24 as the team attempted a late comeback.
