Alan Shearer and Micah Richards agree on Liverpool’s Europa League chances. The Reds are the team most likely to lift the trophy in Dublin in 2024, despite losing to Union Saint-Gilloise yesterday.
Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast this morning, both Shearer and Richards said they could not see anyone staying with Jurgen Klopp’s side.”Yes, Liverpool look strong with their squad and their experience,” said Shearer.
“They will certainly be one of the favorites and will want to win at Liverpool.”Richards agreed, stating that the Reds would be the team to beat.”I think it’s Liverpool’s competition now given the quality they’ve shown,” said the former Manchester City defender. “You’ve got January ahead of you.
I agree with Alan. I think it’s a bad thing for Liverpool,” he said.Liverpool claim European successLooking at the teams that have qualified for the Europa League and been knocked out of the Champions League, it’s hard not to see Liverpool’s path to success.
Of course, you never know in European competition and the Reds are not happy. But if they have a track record of reaching finals and winning, we have to back them here. But there are also difficult customers.
Roma have reached the European final under Jose Mourinho and must be treated with caution. With Galatasaray and Shakhtar Donetsk also advancing to the last 16, Liverpool could be a tough challenge. But United’s biggest challenger for the potential crown could be Bayer Leverkusen.
Xabi Alonso’s side have been on fire this season. As we approach the halfway point of the season, Leverkusen remain unbeaten in all competitions in 2023/24. The Germans believe they can beat anyone with their incredible firepower. Liverpool also top their group and won’t face Alonso until the quarter-finals.
This may be a possibility. For now, Liverpool are still big favourites. They’re barely out of second place in the group, but now the real work begins. When they return to action in March, we will understand how important they are to winning.
