Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson said there was still “inconsistency” in the squad but praised the direction of the move. He also highlighted his starring role under Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson shouts at his teammates during the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Everton FC at Anfield in Liverpool, England, October 21, 2023.
Alisson highlighted his most important role at Liverpool while also noting the areas where the team can improve. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has admitted there is still room for improvement in the squad’s rebuilding process under manager Jurgen Klopp.
Despite a strong start to the season, Liverpool are ready to make some major changes to improve their performance after their recent 2-0 win over Everton. The departure of six regulars from a squad that enjoyed great success under Klopp led the club to invest more than $182 million in four new midfielders. But despite Alisson’s impressive record, Liverpool have kept just five clean sheets in their last 18 Premier League games. Alisson attributes the team’s defensive inconsistency to a general lack of consistency.
Liverpool have conceded fewer goals than Tottenham, Manchester City and Arsenal this season but still need defensive improvements. Alisson believes the team are heading in the right direction, but admitted they are still in the early stages of their rebuild.
In an interview with the Matchday programme, he said (via the ECHO): “We performed really well in the game and did a really good job. But I think there has been a lack of consistency so far. “We have to get better to get more out of him and we can get better defensively as well.”Liverpool’s significant changes ahead of the 2019 Champions League final, with five midfielders and six forwards leaving the club, have led to a new approach to playing style and formation.
Alisson acknowledged the change, explaining: “I think the way we play has changed a bit because more players have left the club and more players have joined. “Now we look like a team that has the ball and more possession, but still has the ability to get forward quickly and pass quickly.”Despite these changes, Alisson is unlikely to significantly change his goalkeeping role.
He said: “It doesn’t really change anything for me. I always like to play with the ball. “I think because of the way we play, we get more involved when the ball is a little bit higher up the pitch, but it’s still the same role.
“Alisson acknowledges that modern football requires goalkeepers who are comfortable playing in defence, but believes that making saves and performing traditional goalkeeping duties are still the most important aspects of his role. He continued: “Football these days needs a stronger team.
“Goalkeepers have to play and use their feet well, but the most important thing is to make saves and do what goalkeepers do: control the team and call the crosses.”Liverpool.com says: Alisson is right. Keeping the ball out of the net is always the most important task for any goalkeeper, be it Jurgen Klopp or any other goalkeeper. He knows it very well.
Fortunately, it offers many benefits in terms of texture as well. Liverpool were very lucky to have him and he will go a long way to providing the stability Klopp is looking for.
