The latest Arsenal news, including Pep Guardiola’s massive fitness update on Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.
Manchester City star Erling Haaland has been left out of Pep Guardiola’s FA Cup squad for the clash with Huddersfield.
Despite the Norwegian being ruled out of the 2-1 win over Luton Town at the start of December with a foot injury, the reigning champions have won six of their seven games without him, including the Club World Cup.
In addition to Haaland, Jeremy Doku has also been sidelined for the past five weeks with a muscle problem. However, these two injuries have prompted Guardiola to try to bring Kevin De Bruyne back into the starting line-up after a lengthy absence with a hamstring injury.
All three were spotted training ahead of the match against Huddersfield at the Etihad Stadium and Guardiola provided an update earlier this week. “Jeremy and Kevin are both feeling good,” he said in his pregame press conference.
“And Erling’s feeling better. You have to look at the bones. Kevin’s been gone a long time.” We have to be patient and give him and Jeremy time.”But after two or three practices, you start to feel better.
I’m not sure about Sunday or Newcastle, but otherwise I’ll be ready.” Guardiola’s comments about the good performances of Doku and De Bruyne were reflected in his team selection, with both on the bench but Haaland not selected.
With City needing a draw against their Championship opponents, it makes sense for Haaland to be rested. But doubts remain over whether he will be fit to face Newcastle in the Premier League next weekend.
After arriving at Manchester City, there was a belief that Haaland would not be selected if injured despite his contribution to the game, and that proved to be the case before the 23-year-old was cautiously reintroduced.
In his absence, Julian Alvarez scored four goals and provided two assists in seven games, while Phil Foden also impressed. The pair will join Jack Grealish’s attack to welcome the Terriers for this afternoon’s cup tie, with Rodri, Kyle Walker and Ederson also rested.
But Arsenal should not be allowed that luxury, with Gabriel Jesus set to miss their third-round tie against Liverpool with a minor knee injury, Football London understands. Oleksandr Zinchenko is also questionable, while Bukayo Saka and Ben White are battling injuries.
