Liverpool is battling it out with Arsenal and Manchester City for the title this season. The Gunners lead the way but travel to the Etihad in a huge match on Sunday.
Liverpool has been part of one of English football’s greatest rivalries after battling it out with Manchester City over the past eight years. While Liverpool has managed just one Premier League title, it has pushed City all the way, losing out on the final day of the season on two occasions.
The rivalry has pitted arguably the two best managers in the world against each other in Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, with both sides picking up famous victories over the years. Reds icon Jamie Carragher previously suggested it was the ‘highest-quality rivalry in Premier League history, much to the annoyance of Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville.
Liverpool and City are also battling it out for the title this season, although it is Arsenal that leads the way currently. And Carragher thinks Arsenal could take Liverpool’s place as City’s biggest foes, once Klopp departs this summer.
Arsenal travels to the Etihad in a crunch clash on Sunday and Carragher writes in The Telegraph: “The potential is there for their meetings to join the list of great English rivalries of the last 30 years. I am thinking Arsenal vs Manchester United in the Arsène Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson years, Chelsea vs United when José Mourinho first came to England, or more recently Guardiola vs Klopp.
“Guardiola vs Mikel Arteta is not there yet and the animosity levels may never be fully comparable, but it is creeping ever closer because the stakes are so high now. When Klopp leaves England this summer, Arteta is the best placed coach to fill the void as Guardiola’s biggest adversary.”
Arsenal go into this weekend’s matches top of the table on goal difference, although Liverpool could move ahead with victory over Brighton earlier on Sunday. Carragher believes victory for the Gunners could prove decisive in the title race.
