The San Antonio Spurs have struggled with center depth since the trade deadline. Zach Collins is now with the Chicago Bulls, Charles Bassey strained his MCL, and Jeremy Sochan, despite his strengths, is not suited to play long minutes as a backup center.
To make room for the recently-signed Alex Len, the Lakers waived Christian Wood. It was an easy choice. Len is healthy, and Wood hasn’t played all season. Wood is very far removed from his 21-point and 9.6 rebound season in 2020-21, and in 50 games last season with the Lakers averaged 6.9 points and 5.1 rebounds, although he can space the floor and play a little defense. With him, injuries are a major concern, as he has never even appeared in 70 games in a single season.
However, adding another piece–any piece–behind Wembanyama, Bassey, and Sandro Mamukelashvili needs to be a priority for the Spurs. If Biyombo isn’t that guy, Wood could be.
