As the winter schedule heats up, Liverpool will face another short change of fixtures when they travel to Bournemouth in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Goals from Diogo Lotta, Davin Nunes and Mohamed Salah helped Liverpool to a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon. The win lifted Jurgen Klopp’s side to fourth in the Premier League and took the club’s tally to 23 points from 10 league games after an impressive start to the season.
But United will have one more chance on Wednesday night when they travel to the Vitality Stadium to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. Liverpool have played just one league game so far this season and were in dominant form in a 3-1 win over Championship side Leicester City at Anfield in September. Klopp has only won the competition once in the 2021/2022 season but will no doubt relish the opportunity to win another trophy this year. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at Liverpool’s trip to Bournemouth.
Date, start, stadium, referee and VAR
Date: Wednesday, November 1, 2023
Start time: 19:45 BST / 14:45 ET / 11:45 PT
Stadium: Vitality Stadium
Referee: John Brooks
Assistants: Lee Betts, Achill Howson
Fourth umpire: James Lyningtonkey records
Liverpool may not have a long history with Bournemouth, but their record in these games is certainly impressive. The Reds have won 15 of their 20 games, lost two and drawn three.
Incidentally, Liverpool have beaten Bournemouth this season and won 3-1 at Anfield last August. After conceding a goal within three minutes of the first half, goals from Luis Diaz, Salah and Jota were disallowed and Alexis McAllister’s red card proved not to be costly.
Of course, Liverpool thrashed the Cherries 9-0 last season, equaling their record for most wins in a Premier League competition. It was a day to be remembered for a long time when former Bournemouth manager Scott Parker was sacked after an outstanding performance.
But there can be no peace for the Reds ahead of their trip to the south coast on Wednesday night. Liverpool lost 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium last season, with Salah also missing a penalty in the disappointing defeat.Ironically, this fixture comes after Liverpool faced former seven-man rivals Manchester United at Anfield a week earlier. Bournemouth have faced Liverpool twice in the Carabao Cup under a different name in 2014 and 2015. The latter match actually marked Klopp’s first win as Manchester United manager with a 1-0 victory at Anfield thanks to Nathaniel Clyne’s goal.
Where to watch Bournemouth-Liverpool on TV
Unfortunately for Liverpool fans in England, Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match will not be broadcast. Great to hear the game on talkSPORT radio. In Europe, DAZN and Viaplay are among the broadcasters with rights to the game.
In the United States, the match will be broadcast on ESPN. Match commentary, highlights and full replay will be available globally on LFCTV after the match.
LIVERPOOL TEAM NEWS
Klopp is likely to change his squad significantly on the trip to Bournemouth, as he has done in previous tournaments and in this season’s Europa League. Caoimhin Kelleher could replace Alisson between the sticks, while Joe Gomez and Joel Matip should return to the starting line-up. Jarell Quanza could also start, with Gomez moving to right guard.
Andy Robertson’s long-term injury after dislocating his shoulder means Luke Chambers or Callum Scanlon, who played against Toulouse last Thursday, could be rested alongside Kostas Tsimikas.
Ryan Gravenbirch has started Liverpool’s last three games so will spend time on the bench alongside Alexis McAllister and Dominic Szoboszlai. Wataru Endo, who had an impressive performance in the Europa League, is likely to feature alongside Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott.
Of course, Luis Diaz will still be missing after his father was kidnapped in Colombia, while Jota is likely to start on the left after scoring in the last two games. Cody Gakpo, who scored an extra-time goal for offside against Nottingham Forest, could feature up front and Ben Doak could miss out due to Mohamed Salah’s injury.
Thiago, Stefan Weissetic and Connor Bradley are missing.
