As part of its ongoing campaign against excessive spending, the Premier League has punished another team for breaking Financial Fair Play regulations.
Leicester City is the most recent team to suffer the wrath of the Premier League, even though they are no longer even in the competition.
This season, Everton and Nottingham Forest have already been punished with point deductions; the Toffees started with a -10 point reduction, while Forest was slammed with a -4 point deduction.
Due to suspected violations of the profit and sustainability regulations (PSR) and their inability to provide audited financial records for their last three league seasons, Leicester City has been referred to an independent commission.
In the event that the leaders of the Championship are found guilty, they may lose points.
In addition, the English Football League is looking into the club as part of a different financial investigation.
In reaction to the Premier League, Leicester City has made the following statement:
“The Premier League’s recent actions have taken Leicester City by surprise. Even though LCFC is not a Premier League team at the moment, the Club is deeply saddened that the Premier League has decided to charge LCFC at this time, given the Club’s attempts to interact positively with the Premier League regarding the issues that are the focus of this charge.
“In order to ensure that any prospective charges are properly resolved by the appropriate parties at the appropriate time, LCFC is still prepared and keen to participate in constructive dialogue with the Premier League and the EFL.
“The Club continues to carefully consider counsel about its stance and will defend itself if needed against any illegal actions by the football authorities, should they attempt to exercise jurisdiction in areas where they are unable to, as happened earlier this year.
“Over a significant amount of time, LCFC has consistently shown through its operating model that it is committed to the P&S regulations. In doing so, the Club has achieved compliance while pursuing sporting goals that are totally reasonable in light of the Club’s sustained success in both domestic and European competition.
“We will keep fighting for every club’s right to pursue its goals as long as we are able to advocate the Club’s viewpoint, especially in cases where such goals have been legitimately and fairly established via consistent athletic success.
“The Club expresses gratitude to its supporters for their cooperation in this situation and for sticking with us as we continue to put our team’s on-field success in the closing weeks of the season as our top priority.”
