Northwestern transfer forward Cade Bennerman committed to the University of North Carolina basketball program on Monday, April 27, 2026. The 7-foot post player joins head coach Michael Malone’s squad after redshirting his freshman season in the Big Ten.
Bennerman possesses a 7-foot-5 wingspan and weighs 205 pounds, providing the Tar Heels with significant height in the frontcourt. According to Inside Carolina, the developmental prospect did not appear in a regular-season game last year and retains four seasons of collegiate eligibility.
The commitment follows the departure of center Henri Veesaar, who recently declared for the NBA Draft. While Bennerman is not expected to immediately replace Veesaar’s production, he offers much-needed depth following the transfer of James Brown to Howard University.
Coach Michael Malone and his staff have prioritized interior development as they rebuild the roster for the upcoming season. 247Sports reporter Andrew Jones noted that the coaching staff has been in consistent communication with Bennerman since he entered the transfer portal. Before his stint at Northwestern, Bennerman was ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in Tennessee for the 2025 recruiting class. He held several scholarship offers during his high school recruitment, including interest from Michigan, Penn State, California, and South Florida, as reported by Keeping It Heel.
The Tar Heels continue to scout the international market for additional frontcourt help to complement recent commit Maxim Logue. According to the Heel Report Podcast, the program remains in pursuit of at least one more center with professional experience to bolster the rotation for next season.
