Cody Gakpo reserved a message of thanks to the 1300 Liverpool supporters who braved the elements of Storm Ciaran to cheer their team to victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday night.
Gakpo scored his first goal since September 30 when he registered in the first half of the 2-1 win before the Reds were pegged back by Justin Kluivert’s equaliser. Darwin Nunez’s stunning goal won it for Jurgen Klopp’s men and Gakpo was thankful for the supporters who had made a round trip of over 500 miles in midweek to inspire the side to the last eight of the Carabao Cup at a rain-soaked Vitality Stadium.
Such was the adverse weather conditions that Liverpool’s flight home was cancelled before they were made to travel back by road and Gakpo expressed his gratitude to the fans as a result.
“Thank you very much,” Gakpo said. “They are always there to support us. Really grateful they’re with us every time. “It was cold, rainy and windy but we won and did well. We created good chances. They had a few opportunities as well.
“The ball went everywhere with the wind. It was nice to score. Darwin is doing great. It was an amazing goal – cutting inside, top corner, fantastic.”
The Reds return to Premier League action when they are entertained by Luton Town on Sunday afternoon.
