Cooper Flagg Sends Strong Message on Mom After Freshman Season at Duke
Cooper Flagg cemented his legacy as one of the most talented players in Duke Blue Devils history, coming off his freshman college basketball season.
Flagg led Duke to a 35-4 record after committing to the ACC program as the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2024, per 247Sports.
Following the season, Flagg took a trip to Los Angeles, where he received the Wooden Award. Flagg won the prestigious honor over some of college basketball’s biggest stars such as Auburn’s Johni Broome and Purdue’s Braden Smith.
Flagg shared his thoughts on the award, as well as reflecting on his freshman season, in a recent interview with ESPN.
During the interview, Flagg was asked about his support system. Flagg gave credit to his parents, revealing that his mother has been a major aide in his success.
Flagg also mentioned that his mother always holds him accountable, especially for his free throws.
“Every time I missed a free throw, she was always yelling at me,” Flagg said. “Sometimes I heard it in the game, sometimes I heard it after the game. After every game she always gives me her rundown on things I could have done better. That’s what I have my mom for, she’s always keeping it real with me.”
During his freshman season with the Blue Devils, Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game.
Flagg led Duke to the Final Four, having defeated Alabama, Arizona, Baylor and Mount Saint Mary’s in the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Devils’ season came to a halt in the Final Four, losing to Houston after watching a 14-point lead disappear in the second half.
Flagg is now predicted to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft in a class that includes stars like Rutgers teammates Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey.
