Darwin Nunes says he will strive to “follow in the footsteps” of Uruguay and Liverpool legend Luis Suarez.
Liverpool’s number 9 has been in fine form this season. Appeared in 17 matches, scoring 7 goals and 4 assists.
The 24-year-old continued his strong international run by scoring the breakthrough goal as Uruguay beat Argentina in a World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires last Friday.
After a difficult year following his big-money move to Liverpool, Nunez has emerged as a leading player for both club and country.
For the national team, the striker took over the number 9 shirt from Uruguayan legend and former Liverpool goalscorer Suarez. Suarez, now 36, joined Marcelo Viesa’s squad for the first time since the 2022 World Cup this month after strong performances for Gremio.
Nunes admitted it was a “special” moment for Uruguay to celebrate their famous victory alongside Argentina’s national team.”Celebrating with Luis is really fun and special,” Nunes said via El Pais.
“He is the Uruguayan dwarf who made history. I always try to follow in his footsteps.””Lewis is very important to our group.” Nunes, a former Premier League Golden Boot winner, spoke about himself and the less experienced Uruguayan stars.
“He is an experienced player and has played more times for the national team than before. It is great to have him here, he has contributed [to the youth] and we have learned from him.
“Nunes and Suarez will look to keep the pressure on qualifying leaders Argentina when they face Bolivia on Wednesday morning.
