Darwin Nunez scored Liverpool’s 1000th goal under Jurgen Klopp in stunning fashion as fans joked “of course it’s him”.
The Reds were already one to the good in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie away at Sparta Prague thanks to Alexis Mac Allister’s early penalty when Nunez let fly from range.
His curling effort flew past the opposition goalkeeper to not only double the advantage, but also bring up four-figures of goals during Klopp’s time in charge.
One Liverpool fan joked: “Of course it was always going to be Darwin Nunez.” Another commented: “Liverpool 1000 goals under Klopp and the interesting thing is, it’s Darwin’s banger.”
“Darwin scored the 1000th goal, simply beautiful,” hailed a third, while a fourth praised: “And that’s some goal by Nunez to bring the 1000th goal.” With a fifth posting a gif of Nunez with the caption: “At your service.”
Liverpool headed into half-time 3-0 ahead, with Nunez getting his second of the match in stoppage time with a well-executed volley. But the hosts, who had spurned a number of chances in the opening 45 minutes, got one back almost instantly after the restart.
Conor Bradley, who had just been introduced in place of Joe Gomez, converted into his own net, albeit with a fabulous finish had it been at the other end of the pitch. It didn’t take long for the three-goal lead to be restored, however, thanks to Luis Diaz’s deflected strike.
But it wasn’t all good news for Klopp. Just as he welcomes Dominik Szboszlai and Mohamed Salah back into the fold, Ibrahima Konate was forced off through injury before the fourth goal ahead of the crunch Premier League clash at home against Manchester City on Sunday (March 10).
