Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has to be considered one of the greatest African footballers ever.
Africa has produced some of world football’s true greats, from Samuel Eto’o all the way to Victor Osimhen at the moment.
Speaking to Goal, Yaya Toure has been ranking some of the best African players of all-time, and he’s put Salah up there among some absolute legends.
Salah sat behind both Didier Drogba and Eto’o in Toure’s rankings, but he was placed ahead of both Nwankwo Kanu and Jay-Jay Okocha.
Salah above Okocha and Kanu
Toure shared his verdict on the £34m Liverpool star.
“Mohamed Salah, oh this is difficult, I’ll have him as the number two ranking, Samuel Eto’o at number one. Drogba, because I played with him, I know his value, he’s another number one, Kanu, I’d put him at number four. Jay-Jay Okocha, because there are five players he’ll have to go at number five,” Toure said.
One of the best
When all is said and done, Salah may have to go down as one of Africa’s greatest ever players.
Yes, he’s not actually won a Cup of Nations, yet, but his performances at club level have been truly incredible for so long now.
Drogba may be more iconic a player due to nostalgia and the big moments he produced, but Salah does have more Premier League goals than the Ivorian now, and his goal-to-game ration blows Drogba’s out of the water.
Samuel Eto’o does have a strong argument to make for being up there with Salah, but even then you’d be hard-pressed to explain why Eto’o truly deserves to rank above Salah in a list like this.
There have been some amazing players to come out of Africa in recent years, and Salah may well be the best we’ve seen to date.
