Diogo Jota slammed Alan Shearer and other points that labeled “diving” against Newcastle United this month. The post-meci reaction following Liverpool’s New Year’s New Year’s victory over Magpies focused on Anthony Taylor’s decision to give a delayed penalty. Newcastle did not pull a goal back to calm the nerves until the referee pointed to the controversial spot.

Jota went one-on-one with Martin Dubravka and hit the post late on, beating goalkeeper Thun. Mohamed Salah buried the penalty but Newcastle missed the final whistle. Former Magpies striker Shearer slammed Jota on social media and in an interview with The Rest Is Football host Gary Lineker. He said: “It sank, Very easy. This is the cleanest dive I have ever seen. It was a bit of a touch, but he could have stood there and touched it.

However, the Portuguese striker rejected these offers and preferred to shoot into the empty net. Jota also confirmed that Dubravka interrupted him before a penalty was awarded after the match. “Of course we’ve seen some comments from former players and people paid to talk about the situation,” Jota said. “All I can say is that even the goalkeeper said it was a touch and I felt I was in a position where I couldn’t get up. “That’s why I prefer to score goals. What I like is scoring goals. That’s all I have to say.”
