With all the strange things going on in college basketball right now, and multiple conferences now not allowing teams to sign guys who have played in professional leagues or signed professional contracts, it raises questions about what rosters will look like.
There are positives for multiple programs, including Duke, which did a really good job in this year’s transfer portal and high school class. Head coach Jon Scheyer is a no-drama type of guy and doesn’t really seem to get involved in situations like this.
I bet if he had the opportunity to get a player he really wanted, he would’ve done it, but ultimately, Scheyer hasn’t. Right now, his roster is in a really good spot because he doesn’t have any of those players to worry about, but others could be impacted, so Duke is in a good spot right now.
“While it won’t affect Scheyer’s roster, it could certainly impact the rosters of several of Duke’s competitors. One of the big questions now will be whether Seth Trimble will be eligible to play for Louisville or not. While Trimble never signed his Exhibit 10 contract with the Utah Jazz, he did declare for the NBA Draft and never withdrew.
“The question for players like Trimble – and former Duke forward Mark Mitchell – will be whether it’s fair to enforce that rule on them when they believed at the time they had no other options. When they declared for the draft, there was no avenue for them to return to play college basketball,” John Mitchell wrote.
It’s awesome to see that Scheyer doesn’t have to worry about this, but I don’t think it’s anything more than him just playing his cards right during the offseason. If Duke had a player it really wanted, it would’ve gone after him.
At the same time, it doesn’t feel like Scheyer is willing to do as much as other coaches, since he isn’t as desperate to find talent because he knows how to find it through other avenues.
