Liverpool have been keeping a watchful eye over the progress of one of the country’s top talents.
The Reds have been adept at bringing through their own youngsters recently. From the sensational Trent Alexander-Arnold to the burgeoning Curtis Jones, Liverpool have regained their reputation as a producer of top players.
But according to journalist Ben Jacobs, they’ve also fallen head over heels for one player out of a rival academy: Chelsea’s Levi Colwill. Speaking on the Done Deal Show after reports of Liverpool’s interest in Colwill re-emerged this week, Jacobs drilled home just how much the Reds like the 20-year-old.
“Absolutely he’s on Liverpool’s radar,” began the reporter. “It’s irrelevant because Chelsea see him as part of their leadership team. He’s captained the team this season. Chelsea’s stance is that he’s not for sale but also Chelsea’s stance is that ‘we’d not even but a price on him’. It’s a blanket automatic rejection, but Liverpool know that. So, we’re not talking about this window, we’re not probably talking about the summer.
“The reason why he’s on Liverpool’s radar is because they’ve had this long-standing interest. They knew from his time at Huddersfield that Levi Colwill is an elite centre-back. They’ve been tracking him ever since. It’s just about timing at this stage and exploiting the Chelsea narrative.
“It might be one more for 2025 but there’s no doubt whatsoever that if Liverpool could get Colwill today, tomorrow, in the summer, next year, they would proceed. They absolutely think that the player is a fit.”
Liverpool not backing down on Colwill
With the interest from Liverpool established, Jacobs went on to detail what the Reds’ long-term plan might be around Colwill.
“From Liverpool’s point of view, they can’t just make an offer for the sake of it, you’re wasting your time because Chelsea would just laugh it off,” he said. “They’d auto-reject it. Even Colwill will give Chelsea far more time before he considers a move away.
“It’s one for Liverpool, which they always do, to work on in the long-run but he is absolutely still on their radar.”
So, anyone expecting Colwill through the door over the next year or so can seemingly forget it. As they have been doing since 2021, it’s about playing the long game for Liverpool.
That’s all well and good, but there also has to come a point where the Reds have to move on. Colwill is a fine player, but it has always felt like a really difficult transfer to pull off. Liverpool need to bring in a centre-back sooner rather than later and they can’t afford to keep on waiting.
