Liverpool are working hard to tie up a new contract for vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold.
After the shock news that Jurgen Klopp is set to leave the club this summer, fans have been sweating on the future of Alexander-Arnold, who’s current deal expires in summer 2025.
However, speaking exclusively to RTK, journalist Graeme Bailey reports that an extension for the right-back is almost ready to be sealed.
“I think Liverpool are trying to get Trent done as we speak now,” says Bailey. “I think Trent is the next captain of the club and it’s important for them. They’re not worried, but his deal’s up in 18 months, Trent.
“That’s active, they want that done now. Don’t be surprised if Trent is announced within days, weeks, it really could be. That one they’re determined to get done.
“It doesn’t really matter who’s in charge for him. He’s the new Gerrard, Carragher type figure they want at the club. He’s absolutely essential to them along with Curtis Jones moving forward. So, it’s not that Trent is more important than Virgil [Van Dijk] or Mo [Salah], but in terms of getting their contracts done, he’s getting done.”
Trent extension almost done
This is superb news to hear. With all the uncertainty surrounding key figures at the club just now, we need some sense of security.
Of course, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Trent is ready to commit his future to Liverpool. As a boyhood supporter, why would he want to be anywhere else?
The impending change of manager has been a slight worry to that end. Klopp is all Alexander-Arnold has ever known as a senior player at Anfield. The 56-year-old gave him his start in the first-team and has stuck around ever since.
But just because the man on the touchline is changing, that doesn’t necessarily mean a dimmer future for Liverpool. Trent can surely see that.
As Bailey alludes to, the 25-year-old is part of a trio of big hitters for the Reds who now have less than 18 months to run on their deals.
Unlike Van Dijk and Salah though, Alexander-Arnold is still yet to reach his peak years. You can understand why Liverpool would see getting his deal sorted as being the most pressing matter.
With Klopp still around, there’s even a slight chance that the manager will be involved in Trent signing on yet again.
Until it’s all announced, some nerves will remain for Liverpool fans. But by the sounds of things, this one is nearly over the line.
