Latest Liverpool news as the FA issues a statement after Manchester United and Jürgen Klopp makes an honest admission. Next up is the international break.
Liverpool was knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United at Old Trafford but the home fans let themselves down. Here’s your round-up of the latest Reds news with Jürgen Klopp making an honest admission during his post-match analysis.
FA statement condemns Manchester United behaviour
After tragedy chanting was heard audibly by a section of Manchester United fans at Old Trafford during their side’s FA Cup win over Liverpool, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are looking into the matter. On several occasions before and during the game, various distasteful chants could be heard loud and clear.
“We are aware of the reported tragedy chanting during today’s FA Cup fixture between Manchester United and Liverpool, and we will be liaising with and supporting Greater Manchester Police,” an FA statement read. “We strongly condemn any offensive, abusive and discriminatory chants in football stadiums and we are determined to stamp this behaviour out.
“It is entirely unacceptable and can have a lasting and damaging impact on people and communities within our game. It must stop and we support any club and their fans who try to eradicate this from the terraces.”
Jürgen Klopp makes honest admission after Liverpool defeat
Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp admitted that his side was ‘struggling’ at times against Manchester United, having played a lot of football lately. But the Reds manager also said that he felt his team should have previously put the tie to bed.
“We could have won the game and we would have deserved it,” Klopp said during his post-match press conference. “We were outstanding but we had to finish the game off and we didn’t. At 2-1 up, we had so many chances to kill the game off — we were in a rush in some moments and the rest is already history.
“The boys gave everything. It was a period in the second half when we should have finished it but we didn’t and we knew they could come back. I think my boys showed incredible character again… (but) it was the first time I saw my team struggling. You cannot compare our season to United’s with the amount of games.”
While he is right about the number of matches that his team has faced, that can be no excuse. Liverpool had more than enough encouragement to put the fixture beyond Manchester United at Old Trafford but the forwards failed to find the back of the net. That, ultimately, will be a big frustration for them.
