Liverpool could be the perfect successor for manager Jurgen Klopp as Fabrizio Romano has confirmed there is a “gentleman’s agreement” between “Reds target” Xabi Alonso and his current club Bayer Leverkusen.
Last April, Klopp signed a new contract with Liverpool that will keep him at Anfield until June 2026. He thus put an end to speculation about his management of the German national team in the near future.
However, the 56-year-old specialist is unlikely to sign a new contract with Liverpool anytime soon. German journalist Christian Falk explained on Friday that it was too early to consider a new term for Klopp and that his “biggest goal” after Liverpool would be to coach Germany.
Klopp is fully committed to Liverpool and is likely to confirm his final deal if the Merseyside giants allow him to do so. Liverpool must have a plan if their highly influential manager leaves.
It would be great if they could bring former midfielder Alonso back to Anfield. The Spaniard made 210 appearances for Liverpool between 2004 and 2009, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders and winning trophies including the Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Alonso joined Leverkusen in October 2022 after coaching at Real Madrid and Real Sociedad. Made a huge impression in the Bundesliga. The Leverkusen club have won 11 of their 12 league games this season, ahead of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
Alonso’s men advanced to the Europa League group stage after winning all four games and scoring 12 goals.
Fabrizio Romano discusses the future of Liverpool’s goalThere is talk of a deal between Alonso and Leverkusen that would allow one of his former clubs Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Madrid to buy him at a discount.
In his daily briefing , Romano confirmed that there is a “gentleman’s agreement” between Alonso and Leverkusen. But Liverpool will still have to pay a premium if they want to bring the 42-year-old away from the Bay Arena. “What he (Alonso) has done with Bayer Leverkusen is very special.
Their performance this season has been impressive. They have won all their games with a single draw, scored 62 goals and conceded only 14 of them. “They are a special team, they play fantastic football and are top of their groups in the Bundesliga and the Europa League.
Alonso is a fantastic manager and although he has said there is no proper release clause in his contract, it is no surprise that see links to other clubs now. “There is no official word that other clubs will be activated. I have been told that it is just an agreement between Alonso and the management of Leverkusen.”
Alonso has been targeted by several clubs this summer, but Leverkusen have said they will stay but allow him to move to a top club in the future. “The final decision will be made by Alonso and he will make it in the summer.
But because there is no general release clause, it is more important to convince Alonso than to pay the official release clause to Leverkusen.”Alonso seems the perfect candidate to fill the void left by Klopp’s departure from Liverpool.
It will be very difficult to replace Klopp after what he has achieved, but Alonso will immediately win the support of the fans with his performances. And Alonso seems to be playing the exciting, attacking football that Liverpool fans are used to.
Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher has revealed Liverpool would “love” to make a real signing to give the Reds a double boost.
