Final 247Sports Rankings Released for UNC Basketball Recruits

Taking over near the end of a recruiting cycle is never an easy task, making Michael Malone’s 2026 recruiting class especially important as he begins his tenure at North Carolina.

Malone and his staff managed to hold onto key commitments from Maximo Adams and Malloy Smith, while also adding Kevin Thomas and international prospect Sayon Keita to the 2026 class. Given the timing of his arrival, with only a short window left in the recruiting cycle, the early results for the new UNC staff have been encouraging.

Adams has been viewed as the headliner of the group, giving North Carolina a high-upside, top-tier talent to build around. Thomas adds another quality perimeter piece with long-term development potential, while Smith provides additional depth and versatility for the future. Keita, meanwhile, represents a more developmental international addition who could grow into a role over time.

With the class now finalized, 247Sports released its last update to the 2026 player rankings. In that final evaluation, two Tar Heels recruits broke into the national top 100, signaling that UNC has secured at least a couple of nationally regarded prospects despite the late start in the cycle.

For Malone, the takeaway is straightforward: even with limited time, the foundation of his first recruiting class is already showing national-level talent, and the staff now has a platform to build on as they continue shaping the roster for the years ahead.

Adams led the way for the Tar Heels in the final update, landing at No. 30 overall nationally and solidifying his status as the top-rated player in UNC’s 2026 class. His combination of size, versatility, and long-term upside made him the clear headliner of the group.

Right behind him, Kevin Thomas came in at No. 85 overall. His rise in the rankings came shortly after his commitment to North Carolina, reflecting both his strong recent evaluations and the immediate impact of joining a high-profile program.

Together, the two top-100 prospects give Michael Malone’s first UNC recruiting class a strong early foundation, especially considering how late in the cycle the staff had to assemble the group.

Malloy Smith did not receive a final 247Sports ranking, and the same goes for Sayon Keita. In Keita’s case, the lack of a ranking is tied to his status as an international prospect in the 2026 class, which often places players outside the standard high school ranking system despite clear talent indicators. In fact, Keita is viewed internally as one of the more promising freshman-level centers in the class if he were fully integrated into the domestic rankings.

Even so, North Carolina’s overall class still grades out strongly in the national landscape. The Tar Heels’ 2026 group checks in at No. 8 in the 247Sports team rankings and sits at No. 15 in the composite rankings.

For a first recruiting cycle under Michael Malone, that places UNC firmly inside the top tier of national classes, with two top-100 headliners in Maximo Adams (No. 30 overall) and Kevin Thomas (No. 85 overall) providing the core of the group and a foundation to build on moving forward.
