Former Liverpool players Alvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres clashed on the pitch as the pair dominated youth action in Spain this weekend.
The former Spain team-mates spent two years together at Anfield under Rafa Benitez. While playing for Liverpool, they finished second after a title battle with Manchester United.
Since then, both have been involved in running the academy. Álvaro coaches Real Madrid’s youth team, while Torres holds the same role at Atletico Madrid.Torres also threatened former Liverpool teammate Alvaro.
Both had an altercation while playing for the Madrid club. Torres threatened his former colleague: “I’m going to blow your head off!”But it doesn’t seem like the tension has completely disappeared. The two clashed again to create some ugly scenes in a historic firefight. After the whistle, Arbeloa returned to the locker room (without congratulating Torres) and a fight broke out between the players.
What really happened? Fernando Torres’ team beat Arbeloa 2-1, and the coach decided to leave the field immediately. He did not offer to shake hands with his compatriots after the final whistle. A brawl then broke out on the pitch as Real Madrid players appeared to protest the nature of their opponents’ celebrations.
As at senior level, there is a lot of ill will between clubs in Madrid at youth level as well. But the showdown escalated again in the tech sector on Sunday. Both former Scousers have been coaching since hanging up their boots – Torres in 2019 and Arbeloa in 2017.
Despite loyalties to club and country, they seem to have no regrets towards each other.Torres was kicked out of the previous episode in May, and it seems their friendship has yet to be restored.
