The Italian side romped to a 3-0 victory as the Reds produced a truly dreadful display in front of a backdrop of supporter protest over planned ticket price increases. The result means Jurgen Klopp’s men need to match the club’s greatest-ever comeback in European competition to continue their quest for a place in the final in Dublin next month.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at Anfield.

The Atalanta press officer attempted to calm matters by stating such a response should wait until if it is required next Thursday. But that didn’t stop some of hacks wanting selfies with Gasperini after he’d finished talking.

A regular feature of the last few months has been the increasing demand from supporters on Joe Gomez to finally break his senior goalscoring duck, even if Klopp has never been impressed at the call.

But the insistence on the right-back having a punt from range has dissipated in recent weeks given the realisation there are others in the team who should really be getting on with that kind of thing.

And when Gomez booted one miles over in the second half from range with several attackers better placed, Anfield made vocal their disapproval. Be careful what you wish for, folks.

Jones moans

There was a distinct lack of fight in much of both the performance of the team and the backing of supporters on a truly dreadful evening for Liverpool.

But there was at least one show of passion during the first half when the home side lined up to defend an Atalanta free-kick. There didn’t seem much reason for contention until Turkish referee Halil Umut Meler intervened with a few words towards Curtis Jones, who was forming a one-man wall.

The animated response from Jones suggested the midfielder was both bemused and less than impressed at being targeted by the official.

Not so much a moment as items being missed at Anfield, with fan groups protesting against the planned 2% increase in ticket prices from next season by opting not to produce the normal display of flags before the match.

Instead, there were just two banners, one of which declared the message “No to ticket price increases”. The other, meanwhile, simply stated “FSG Greed”.

In front of Liverpool chairman Tom Werner, it was a point succinctly made by those against the actions of the Reds owners.
