There are set to be plenty of changes at Liverpool over the coming weeks and months.
Not only is Jurgen Klopp preparing to depart his office after almost nine years at the helm, but the appointments of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes represent a new era in Liverpool’s recruitment.
There could yet be further changes, too. Apparently there has been ‘surprise’ over how little the Reds have pushed to tie down Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk to new contracts.
Should any of the three depart along with Klopp this summer, Liverpool will be losing a big, big player. But according to TalkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor, that’s exactly what could now happen.
Liverpool ready for Mo Salah sale
According to Agbonlahor, the time has now come for Liverpool to finally cash in on Salah.
After a huge offer from Saudi Arabia was turned down last year, the Egyptian has gone on to have another stellar year with the Reds.
But with the Saudis reportedly ready to come again, Agbonlahor says it ‘makes sense’ that this time Salah will leave.
“Mo Salah’s got one year left. If a club is going to pay over £100m for a player who’ll be 32 at the start of next season…” explained the former England striker.
“It just makes sense for Liverpool financially. We talk about financial fair play now, can Liverpool afford to let Mo Salah go on a free transfer the year afterwards? I can’t see it.
“I just think it makes sense. I think it’s somewhere he would want to go as well, to go and play over there.
He’s done it all at Liverpool, it just seems right this summer.”
Why would Liverpool sell Mo Salah
For plenty of Liverpool fans, it absolutely would not ‘make sense’ to sell Salah in just a few months time. With Klopp on his way out, losing the £34m man as well would be too much for some to take.
Salah has arguably been the Reds’ best player this season and is still operating at a really, really high level. He can obviously offer much to the incoming manager.
However, you can see some sense in what Agbonlahor is saying, too. Whatever happens, you’d think that the offer from Saudi Arabia is going to be something close to £100m.
Even if Liverpool are thinking about handing Mo a new deal, they’re never going to get an offer like that again. With other changes going on at the club already, perhaps it is the right time to truly wipe the slate clean and start again.
As a club who operate in a sustainable way financially, maybe Liverpool can’t turn down that offer twice.
If Mo is on his way though, it would at least be nice to know ahead of time. Then again, a joint Klopp and Salah send-off at Anfield in May might just be a little bit too much to cope with.
