Last winter Cody Gakpo was the only player that Liverpool brought in and that was at the end of the month. A host of names were linked as usual but nothing much came from that.
Gakpo was not seen as the priority at the time as the midfield was struggling mightily. As it were, that portion of the squad was saved for summer as we now know. Luis Diaz is another recent example of a player coming over in the winter transfer window. He made an immediate impact and started in important matches in short order for the club. Our current Captain, Virgil Van Dijk is a shining example of a winter move that has thrived.
Looking at the squad to this point there are a few pieces that could be added. While we have gotten off to a very strong start in all competitions it has not been smooth sailing. A young defensive midfielder is still needed.
Wataru Endo has shown he is rock solid in that spot when given the chance, but at 30 he is not the long-term solution. I’m looking at someone like Andre Trindade for example to fit this mold. The foundational work has already been done for a transfer so it’s disconcerting hearing rumors the club are no longer interested.
In addition to a vibrant No. 6, the defense needs help. Injuries, age and spotty form have hampered the Reds all season.
Virgil is back to his dominant best but the rests of the unit has had its fair share of rough patches. A new full-back along with a top of the line center-half. I fully understand the club is probably not bringing in three players during the winter window but at least one of these must be addressed.
Things have been going well and it looks like the the club is back on track to being amongst the best in the business. However, they cannot rest on their laurels and must be proactive to stay competitive.
We will find out soon enough if it’ll be another month of baseless links or if the board means business this winter. Hopefully it’s the latter.
We are about a month and a half away from the January transfer window opening up around Europe. Granted the loaded winter fixture list before that means there is still work to be done. But, projecting ahead how aggressive should the Reds be? Let’s discuss.
