How Klopp’s consistently inconsistent star cost Liverpool three-points against Luton


Liverpool went to Luton in the English Premier League and almost had a match to forget. The Reds were trailing against the newcomers and were on the verge of losing all three points. On came Luis Diaz, who scored a header to take home one point from this match. Liverpool were dominant in the match, but their forwards failed to show their magic. Darwin Nunez led the attack, along with Mo Salah and Diogo Jota.

Darwin Nunez was leading the attack and was the main attacker in the match. He got the most opportunities and could have completed a hat-trick. Things were not going in his favour and the Reds had to settle for a draw. This also ended Nunez’s run of good form in the last few matches. Let’s take a look at what went wrong with Nunez in that game.

Darwin Nunez found his touch in front of the goal during the October international break. Nunez headed to international duty with an assist against Brighton in the Premier League. He then went on to score a goal in five of the next six matches. Nunez has been ever-present in the attack. His touch map shows that the player likes to go wide to receive the ball. This allows his teammates to take central positions and score goals.

Nunez likes to drift more towards the left side and this can be witnessed from the above progressive runs graph. The Uruguayan has enjoyed more dribble success from the left side.

The 24-year-old headed to the international break and scored a goal each against Colombia and Brazil. He then made a cameo appearance in the Merseyside Derby and provided an assist. This was followed by a goal each in the next three games played in all competitions.

Darwin Nunez attempted 15 shots and had a high accuracy rate of 66.7% in these matches. Nunez is a proper number nine and often finds space around the six-yard box. With the quality that Liverpool have, scoring goals becomes easier.

The forward also added three assists during this period. Nunez has the ability to link plays and found Mo Salah two times. The other assist was provided in the international break. By looking at the above viz we can observe that three passes have been attempted to the left and these have given opportunities to Salah to score a goal.

In the match against Luton Town, Nunez attempted eight shots and three were on target. He started positively with two on-target shots from outside the penalty box. He then missed an open goal from inside the box and even hit the crossbar with an effort.

Darwin Nunez had a night to forget and he will look to return to goal-scoring form. Liverpool needs their striker to score goals and win championships.
