How late Liverpool comeback helped preserve Leeds United Anfield claim

Sunday’s Premier League classic encounter between Liverpool and Fulham may be a million miles away from Leeds United’s Championship promotion clash – but Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late winner was still of some signifcance to the Whites.

Jurgen Klopp’s side looked to be heading for a surprise defeat when substitute Bobby De Cordova-Reid’s 80th-minute goal made it 3-2 to the Cottagers in what was a roller-coaster Premier League clash. However late strikes from Japan international Wataru Endo and England star Alexander-Arnold ensure another Anfield win.

The victory means Leeds United are still the last side to record a Premier League win over Liverpool at Anfield – back in October 2022. They have been beaten on home soil since, but not in a league fixtures, with the mighty Real Madrid the last side to win any game at the famous ground back in February. It was Jesse Marsch’s Leeds who shocked Anfield more than two years with a 2-1 win in a late Saturday night kick-off. Rodrigo got the visitors off to the perfect start after just four minutes, but when Mo Salah levelled with less than 15 minutes on the clock, most expected the Reds to take control of the game.

However, a late winner from Crysencio Summerville silenced Anfield and gave Leeds three huge Premier League points. That win was actually Leeds’ first at Liverpool for more than 20 years, with the previous 2-1 win back in 2001, courtesy of goals from Lee Bowyer and Rio Ferdinand.

Illan Meslier, Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk all started that game, along with Summerville, while the three subs that day are also still current players – Patrick Bamford, Willy Gnonto and Luke Ayling.
