“I had to pinch myself” – Defender on recently facing Liverpool star at Anfield, ‘something very special’

 

Union SG defender Kevin Mac Allister has admitted he had to pinch himself when he took on brother Alexis Mac Allister in the Europa League clash with Liverpool.

The centre-back has been speaking to De Morgen about life in Belgium so far and his currently more famous brother.

 

Mac Allister has been with Union SG since a €1.5m move from Argentinos Juniors, who he had been with since he was a youngster.

He was slower in arriving in Europe than his brother Alexis, who originally moved to England with Brighton in an €8m move from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019.

He returned to the Argentine side that year and then went to Boca Juniors the year after before officially arriving at Brighton in January 2020.

He eventually established himself as a star for the Seagulls, winning the World Cup with Argentina in 2022 before then securing a €42m move to Liverpool in the summer.

He’s been a key player there ever since and so was in the side when the Reds hosted Union SG at Anfield in the Europa League back in August.

 

That saw the two brothers coming up against each other in the middle of the park, something Kevin won’t be forgetting any time soon.

“I had already played against Francis, but never against Alexis,” he said.

“It was a proud moment for the whole family. And man, playing at Anfield… That was very normal for my brother, but that is something very special. I had to pinch myself.

 

“Who would have thought this when we were little boys walking around Buenos Aires. You would pay a lot of money to experience something like that. It was just perfect.
