“I told you then…” – BBC pundit admits he was wrong about Virgil van Dijk.

Alan Shearer’s initial verdict on Liverpool’s January 2018 signing of Virgil van Dijk has been proven wrong.

The transfer was widely hailed as one of the biggest coups in history. In modern LFC history. Speaking on the BBC’s Match Top 10 podcast, the Premier League’s top goalscorer believed the Merseysiders had beaten the odds at the time – and is now rethinking that view.

Gary Lineker: “He reminds me of Van Dijk, who gave Liverpool so much. Didn’t they really sign him from Southampton?” Shearer replied: “I think they said it was a lot of money for a centre-back at the time.

You can’t be right about everything, right?” In fairness to the former Newcastle striker, the £75million move six years ago was a gamble for Liverpool. Liverpool’s hierarchy realized they had to roll the dice to restore what was then a very problematic position.

Within 18 months, Van Dijk repaid this compensation along with the rest. In his first full season at Anfield (about 35 minutes of play), United conceded 22 goals in the Premier League. When he made his top-flight debut for us after the break, we had scored 28 goals. of the 2017/2018 campaign.

In 2019, he won the PFA Player of the Year award and the Ballon d’Or, while also winning the Champions League and playing 50 league games without a last dribble.

The Dutchman’s influence on Liverpool’s defense has been minimal and he is showing signs of returning to that level after a serious injury forced an early end to the 2020/21 season.Shearer may not have been the only one to raise eyebrows at how much Manchester United paid for Van Dijk, but the current captain proved the outlay was worth every penny.
