Arne Slot has not even officially been announced yet but the attention has already turned to what his Liverpool side might look like. With Jürgen Klopp’s tenure seemingly set to peter out on the field, that should come as no surprise.
Liverpool is expected to finalize a deal to bring Slot in to take over from Klopp imminently, with personal terms not expected to be a stumbling block to any deal. The 45-year-old has already made clear how desperate he is to move to Anfield.
The way that Liverpool’s season has tailed off in the last few weeks — with the Reds crashing out of the FA Cup, then the Europa League, and now the Premier League title race — means that transfer debates are underway before the summer. With Slot favoring a similar style of play to Klopp, it remains the case that wholesale alterations are unlikely, but another injection of quality is a must.
And with the Liverpool attackers having stopped scoring with such regularity, the focus is back on that area of the field. Slot is known to want an attacker-heavy side, liking to have lots of options and changes in forward areas because of the demands he places on those stars, and therefore another forward player could become a priority.
Liverpool already has Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez in its attack, with the likes of Ben Doak and Kaide Gordon bidding to come through the academy. Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai can play further forward as well.
But there are now question marks over a few of those main options, be it because of injury, contract situation, arguments with Klopp, or a combination of the above. Adding another forward is hardly a crazy idea.
Twenty-two-year-old Summerville is a Dutch youth international and represented Feyenoord’s academy before moving to England. In 42 appearances in the Championship this season, he has scored 19 times and assisted a further nine. Summerville has 30 goal contributions in all competitions, which works out as a goal or assist every 119 minutes.
