Jamie Carragher says he is not entirely sure Liverpool are top of the Premier League. As Christmas approaches, tomatoes are now in the lead. It was a good turnaround from last season’s slump.
However, according to Carragher, Liverpool’s position in the table is a little misleading. Writing in The Telegraph, the Reds legend said his eyes say “something different” about his former team. Even if they are the best now. “Liverpool are top of the league but I don’t know what will happen,” Carragher wrote.
“The ratings say one thing, but my eyes say another. “The team is not yet balanced and it is hard to imagine without a ready defensive midfielder.”Liverpool failed to convince Carragher.
Some will not be happy with Carragher’s comments. The former centre-back is one of the most talked about pundits in the country and is sometimes seen as a reward for his status as a Liverpool legend.
Minimizing the Reds’ title chances does not help these criticisms. But on closer inspection, I have to say that Karra makes sense here. It’s been an exciting season so far for Liverpool fans and we’ve had some really good results. But at the same time we are not playing like the teams at the top of the table.
There were plenty of heartbreaking moments between impressive wins over the likes of West Ham United and Aston Villa. Liverpool relied on extra-time winners to beat Newcastle United, Fulham and Crystal Palace.
It was no fluke and Reds should be commended for hanging on until the end. However, the recent emergence of a large number of winners suggests that this situation cannot continue. Many fans also agree with Carragher that a full-time defensive midfielder is needed.
As January approaches, there will no doubt be calls for Liverpool to sign this ‘final piece of the puzzle’.But early signs are that the Reds won’t. And for Karra, it can be expensive.
