Liverpool youngster Jarrell Quansah has ‘praised’ Joel Matip following his serious injury this month. The 20-year-old has impressed at centre-back and earned regular game time under Jurgen Klopp.
He is a regular in the Europa League and also started last week’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace. Quansah scored his first goal for the club in the Europa League game against Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday afternoon.
After the match, the teenager said it was “a shame” that Matip had suffered the injury.
Klopp announced earlier this month that Matip could miss the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament injury. “I think when I was here at the start of the season and not on loan, I thought, ‘I want to play in games like this,’” Quansah said after the game.
“What happened to Joel was disgraceful and I have sympathy for him. But my idea was to get over it and try to become a starting pitcher in the Premier League. “I’m trying and I hope to have more opportunities.
“I’m really trying to push forward and be the best centre-back I can be.”may beMatip’s injury has undoubtedly paved the way for Kwansa to play regularly and establish himself as a key player.
He is still young and Jurgen Klopp does not want to put pressure on him. Matip is also under contract with the club until the end of the season and will not be offered a new contract by the club. This means that Quansah could replace it in the long run.
Reece Williams, 22, could be another option for Klopp, but he needs to prove his worth. Therefore, Klopp is still looking to sign a good centre-back in January or the summer, along with Lilla defender Leni Yoro.
