Jamie Carragher has hit back at Rio Ferdinand on social media after Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
The Reds fell to a disappointing and late 4-3 defeat to Erik ten Hag’s side at Old Trafford, conceding a 121st-minute goal to substitute Amad Diallo.
Liverpool were the better side for the majority of the match but were guilty of handing United their goals and wasting a host of promising opportunities at the other end.
Jurgen Klopp’s players only had themselves to blame for their quarter-final exit, with Liverpool’s wastefulness proving costly come the full-time whistle.
Former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand was quick to share his thoughts on the match after the game, posting a picture of Marcus Rashford and himself celebrating as a player in front of Jamie Carragher on X, simply captioning it: “Wembley!”
However, Carragher was quick to fire back, quoting Ferdinand’s post and writing on X: “Relax [two laughing face emojis]. Man City will beat you comfortably in the final and ETH [Erik ten Hag] will still be in charge next season.
“It’s not the win you think it is!”
Man Utd were handed the easiest semi-final draw of the Premier League teams remaining in the competition, with the Red Devils facing Championship Coventry City.
However, given Man Utd’s inconsistencies this season, even that fixture isn’t a guaranteed victory for Ten Hag’s men.
Chelsea were drawn against reigning champions Manchester City in the other semi-final at Wembley, with Liverpool missing out on a return to the capital having won the Carabao Cup there earlier this season.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?
A number of Liverpool players will now travel around the world during the March international break, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai all representing their countries.
The Reds will return to action in a fortnight, facing Brighton at Anfield in the Premier League on 31 March, followed by quickfire league games against Sheffield United (H) and Man Utd (A).
While exiting the FA Cup is hugely disappointing, especially under the circumstances at Old Trafford, it does give Liverpool the chance to focus on Premier League duties as they fight with Man City and Arsenal for the title
The Reds have also been drawn against Atalanta in the quarter-final of the Europa League as they aim to win the competition for the first time under Jurgen Klopp in his last season with the club.
