Liverpool moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League with their 3-1 win over Sheffield United.
Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher hailed Jurgen Klopp’s substitutions in their 3-1 win over Sheffield United.
The Reds moved back to the top of the Premier League after their hard-fought triumph over the Blades. Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo were on target to return two points clear at the English top-flight ahead of rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.
Gustavo Hamer caused concern for Klopp’s side when full-back Conor Bradley inadvertently steered his header beyond Caoimhin Kelleher. But Mac Allister restored Liverpool’s lead with an emphatic half-volley, 13 minutes from time, before the Dutchman rounded off the scoring by heading past Ivo Grbic.
He tweeted:
“Once again this season the Liverpool subs make the difference, Klopp has utilised the 5 sub rule better than anyone.”
With the game level, the German made a series of bold changes including the surprise withdrawal of top goalscorer Mohamed Salah, who was replaced by Harvey Elliott on the hour mark, just two minutes after the relegation-threatened side drew level.
But the swaps were inspired as Elliott, Andy Robertson, Gakpo and Curtis Jones made telling contributions to continue Liverpool’s formidable run keeping them top of the Premier League with eight games remaining.
With goals in the 77th and 90th-minute, the Reds extended their impressive record of scoring in the latter stages as Mac Allister and Gakpo netted the 25th and 26th goals this season.
Liverpool visit Manchester United on Sunday with Man City travelling to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace, while Arsenal take on Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
