Jamie Carragher names what Liverpool needs to beat Man City and Arsenal to Premier League title

Liverpool finds itself sandwiched between Arsenal and Manchester City in the title race. Jamie Carragher though believes the Reds could get an advantage soon.

Jamie Carragher believes a Champions League semi-final between Arsenal and Manchester City could ultimately help Liverpool win the Premier League title.

The Reds dropped to second in the title race at the weekend after being held to a 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Sunday. With both Arsenal and City winning the day before, there is now just one point separating all three sides with seven games remaining.

Mikel Arteta’s side leads the way on goal difference, while Pep Guardiola’s team sits a point behind Liverpool. Given the former’s ominous form, it looks likely that the Reds will need a slip-up or two from the Gunners to claim the title.

They could be helped though by Arsenal and City’s European exploits. Both sides are in Champions League action this week as they face Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively in the quarter-finals.

Should both sides make it through, they’ll then face each other in the semi-finals. That, Carragher believes, could hand Liverpool an advantage.

“It’s interesting how important that point will be,” Carragher said about Liverpool’s draw with United on The Gary Neville Podcast. “I think if Arsenal or Manchester City play as well as Liverpool did here, they win. And all the teams are different.

“I actually think Manchester City are the best team. Defensively we know that Arsenal are the best at the moment and Liverpool have more goals and more players they can bring off the bench to win a game.

“But we know Liverpool are more chaotic. The other two — Manchester City definitely — have more control. And that has let Liverpool down; the fact that they are more chaotic has allowed Manchester United to get back into the game.

“Listen, there is a long way to go. I do believe that Arsenal will drop points — in a different way. Arsenal may have games where they don’t score — maybe away from home, when they’re trying to chase that one goal. Whereas Liverpool will always score goals and Manchester City are Manchester City.

“For Liverpool to win the league — and I’ve always believed this — they need the two of them [Manchester City and Arsenal] to play each other in the Champions League semi-final. They both need to get through because I know psychologically and physically what it’s like playing an English team. It takes a lot out of you and when you’re going for a league title, that could help Liverpool.”

Arsenal and Manchester City facing a couple of gruelling games against each other may well be an advantage for Liverpool. The only problem is, they could potentially come too late in the season.

The semi-finals are scheduled for the end of April and the beginning of May. Arsenal will have both Chelsea and Tottenham out of the way by then, two fixtures that could potentially be banana skins for them, and they travel to United after the second leg.

As for City, they’ll fully expect to win their games around the two ties. If a slip-up is to arrive, Liverpool might need it before the potential semi-final.
