Carragher’s former side Liverpool currently lead the league by a point after going nine games unbeaten. But Jurgen Klopp’s squad still doesn’t look complete this season. They drawled Luton earlier last month after beating Crystal Palace and Fulham in recent weeks.
Arsenal are just one point behind Jurgen Klopp’s side after losing to Aston Villa last week. Meanwhile, reigning champions Manchester City are three points behind after a disappointing run of form with just one win in their last five league games. With rivals Liverpool dropping points, Carragher believes his former side will not need many points to win their first title since 2020. “This could be one of those mid-1980s seasons where a team wins the league on points,” he told the Telegraph. Manchester City is in 4th place, 4 points behind.”In all but three of the last 10 seasons, the lead after 16 games has been greater than Liverpool’s lead this weekend.”The team has scored 90 or more points in four of the last six seasons. Pep Guardiola’s side scored 89 points last year, their lowest total in six seasons, and City’s 86 points saw them to the title in 2020/21.
Liverpool face tough games against Manchester United and Arsenal in the next two weeks. But with City soon to lead the Club World Cup, Carragher believes this period presents a golden opportunity.
Jamie Carragher believes the hot and competitive Premier League form this season could lead to a lower points total than last year.
