Jermaine Pennant says 58-year-old manager would happily ditch his club for Liverpool

 

Xabi Alonso has rejected the chance to become the next Liverpool manager, but there are others who will gladly accept the job.

The Reds are on the hunt for a new boss to replace Jurgen Klopp this summer. The German announced in January that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

 

Alonso, who is doing an incredible job at Bayer Leverkusen, was Liverpool’s top target, but he publicly announced on Friday that he will not be leaving the German club.

The Merseysiders are now looking elsewhere, and Jermaine Pennant has made a very interesting suggestion.

Jurgen Klopp is one of the best managers in the world. There are very few who are as good as him, and replacing him will not be easy at all.

 

Liverpool have been linked with many names recently. Xabi Alonso‘s rejection has pushed the likes of Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi to the top of their list.

However, they aren’t the only ones the Reds are looking at. Diario de Noticias claimed that Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is also under consideration.

Jermaine Pennant, who played 81 times for Liverpool back in the day, believes the Australian would gladly leave Spurs and move to Anfield if the Reds offered him the job.

 

He said on talkSPORT: “I’d like to see Postecoglou in the conversation.

“Where Spurs were to where they are now is night and day and that’s credit to him, he’s done a fantastic job. I think that if Liverpool came knocking on the door and said ‘Pos, here you go mate, get yourself in, Klopp’s going’, I think he’s jumping ships.

“The reason I’m saying that is because Liverpool will always be fighting for silverware, Champions League and the league. They have won everything domestically in the last seven-eight years. If he’s at Spurs, they don’t win anything, they’ve not won anything for donkey’s years.

 

“I think he’s doing a great job. If Liverpool knock on his door I think he’s jumping ships. Why would you not manage a better team and be guaranteed to be in the mix for silverware.”

Comparing Jurgen Klopp and Ange Postecoglou’s first seasons in the Premier League

Ange Postecoglou really has done an excellent job at Tottenham, but how do his numbers fare against Klopp’s in his first season at Liverpool?

Klopp managed 30 games in the Premier League in the 2015/16 season after taking the job in October. Liverpool won 13 of those fixtures, drew nine and lost eight, scoring 55 goals and conceding 40. He averaged 1.6 points per game then.

Postecoglou has managed 29 games as Tottenham manager in the Premier League so far. He has won 17, drawn five and lost seven. Spurs have scored 61 goals and conceded 43 this season and have picked up an average of 1.93 points per game.

 

We’re not saying Postecoglou is better than Klopp, but the 58-year-old Australian’s numbers look really good, and we think he would be a great option for Liverpool if they can get him.
