Jordan Henderson is set to become Ajax’s new captain after impressing his manager and team-mates with his leadership skills.
The former Liverpool captain has made just one appearance since returning to Europe for Al-Etifaq but is likely to be named club captain by now. According to The Mirror, Henderson will wear the armband when they travel to Heerenveen on Sunday.
The reason is that former full-back and current Tottenham captain Steven Bergwine was on site due to injury. According to reports, Henderson’s armband may not be one-time captain as Ajax coach John van Schiff could appoint him as permanent captain.
Henderson is believed to have had “such a positive impact on the dressing room” that he was named permanent captain. The England midfielder was seen praising him by Ajax midfielder Kenneth Taylor, who gave him great support in the dressing room.
Having Jordan in the locker room with the team is huge,” Taylor said. “Everyone can tell he’s been playing at a high level in Europe and the UK for a few years now. Jordan is great on the pitch and a natural leader and coach.
“He always supports the young players, sees things faster than others and always tells us how to wait.” The gameplay is already smoother. Now simple things stay in the player’s mind and automatically create many things in our game. I like everything.
It is not yet known whether he will be named permanent captain or share duties with Bergwijn, but he will wear the armband for the first time since his move to Holland on Sunday.
