Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez scored in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Burnley in the Premier League but is now just two yellow cards away from serving a two-match ban. Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League with Darwin Nunes scoring to beat Burnley at Anfield on Saturday.
The Uruguayan striker scored Liverpool’s third goal to give Jurgen Klopp’s side a much-needed win. Nunes has scored eight league goals this season but it was her first Premier League home goal since the 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest last October.
He has certainly scored in the cup games since then, but has struggled in front of goal in the league at Anfield, particularly in the win against Chelsea. However, despite his goal, he is currently serving a suspension after picking up a yellow card against Burnley. It was his eighth of the season and if a player gets 10 yellow cards it means they face a two match ban.
This rule applies until the 32nd match of the season, after which the yellow card limit increases to 15. Yellow cards do not transfer between competitions, so Nunez’s Premier League card will not affect the Carabao Cup and he will not miss the final against Chelsea unless he is sent off.
Liverpool have a home game against Brentford this weekend, while Luton and Nottingham Forest also have home games, with a potential title clash against Manchester City at Anfield on March 10. If the striker gets two yellow cards for that, he will have to wait until Pep Guardiola arrives.
Liverpool travel to face Everton and Manchester United before the end of April, but their match against Everton could be postponed if Liverpool beat Southampton in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Nunes has been a key player for Liverpool this season, missing just one Premier League game (a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in September). He has since become a regular part of Klopp’s starting line-up, making 22 starts in all competitions. He has scored more Premier League goals this season (74) and his recent form in the absence of Mohamed Salah has been excellent.
Nunes has scored four more goals and provided four more assists in Liverpool’s last nine games, but only three players have been booked more in the top flight. The way Darwin Nunes plays, he always tries to be booked.
He plays on the edge every play, making him rarely a match for opposing quarterbacks. Klopp doesn’t want to change but with the City game coming up and the Liverpool manager doesn’t want to lose his No.9 shirt.Klopp is likely to hold friendly talks with the forward if he is in the ninth spot this weekend.
He could rest the Uruguayan for this weekend’s Carabao Cup final or be ruled out of the games against Luton or Forest.
